Believable Agents in Intelligent Virtual Worlds

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Believability is an important characteristic of intelligent virtual agents, however, very few attempts have been made to define and formalise it. This paper provides a formal analysis of believability, focused on diverse aspects of believability of the agents and the virtual environment they populate, approaching the problem from the perspective of the relations between the agents and the environment. The paper demonstrates the practical application of the outcomes of believability analysis towards enabling virtual agents to reason about their environment – the virtual world in which they are embedded, interpret the interaction capabilities of other participants, own goals and current state of the environment, as well as to include these elements back into interactions. As a proof of concept we have developed an intelligent platform, where the identified believability features are implemented. Using it, we have created the prototype of ancient Sumerian city, where believable virtual agents simulate the daily life of its citizens.

Modelling Motivational Behaviour in Intelligent Agents in Virtual Worlds

The MAS group at the DFKI is developing ar-chitectures for animated agents in virtual worlds. Within the tradition of AI there are many techniques that can be used to model the cognitive abilities of such characters, in particular the ability to learn from the environment and plan actions that lead to a well deened goal. Some have argued, however, that these techniques are too complex Reilly, 1...

Expectation and complex event handling in BDI-based intelligent virtual agents (demonstration)

When operating in virtual communities, intelligent agents should maintain a high-level awareness of the physical and social environment around them in order to be more believable and capable. However, due to the inherent differences between virtual worlds and agent systems such as BDI, such a high-level of awareness has not been achieved for IVAs. In this paper we present a system that enables ...

Improving Awareness of Intelligent Virtual Agents

Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVAs) are interactive characters controlled by software agents that exhibit human-like qualities. When interacting with human participants in virtual communities, an IVA is expected to be intelligent, as well as believable. A major factor that determines the intelligence and believability of an IVA is its ability to be aware of its physical and social environments. A...

Believable and Effective AI Agents in Virtual Worlds: Current State and Future Perspectives

The rapid development of complex virtual worlds (most notably, in 3D computer and video games) introduces new challenges for the creation of virtual agents, controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Two important subproblems in this topic area which need to be addressed are (a) believability and (b) effectiveness of agents’ behavior, i.e. human-likeness of the characters and high abil...
